HOW DO YOU FEEL ABOUT YOURSELF?

RATE YOUR SELF-ESTEEM

By Bethany Miller, Psy.D.

Most people feel bad about themselves from time to time.  So, when answering these questions, think about how you feel most of the time.

1.  Are you easily hurt by criticism?  Yes No
2.  Do you feel there are a lot of things wrong with you? Yes No
3.  Do you try to hide your feelings from others?  Yes No
4.  Do you fear close relationships?   Yes No
5.  Do you try to blame your mistakes on others? Yes No
6.  Do you often worry about what others think of you? Yes No
7.  Do you avoid new experiences?  Yes No
8.  Do you continually wish you could change your physical appearance? Yes No
9.  Are you too modest about personal successes?   Yes No
10.Are you glad when others fail? Yes No

If you answered MOST of these questions “yes”, your self-esteem could probably use improvement.

  Ideas to enhance self-esteem:

  • Look at a child and think of all the good things you would tell that child about herself. Then tell yourself the same things.
  • Ask what you want and need for yourself. Advocate for yourself.
  • Make a list of your accomplishments in a day, week, or in your life.
  • Spend time with people who affirm and validate you.
  • Recognize the negative self-statements you make about yourself (i.e.: I’m not good enough, I always mess up, no one likes me etc.) and replace those statements with more realistic ones.
  • Have compassion for yourself.
